Wichita State Shockers
The Wichita State Shockers have a lot to prove coming into 2023, as they were subpar a season ago. They come into this year in an interesting place, as they had four players named to the American Athletic Conference's preseason all-conference team, yet they were still picked to finish just fifth in the preseason baseball poll. That speaks to the fact that there is not a ton of depth on this team, and it will be interesting to see how that impacts them off the bat in Long Beach.
For Wichita State to perform well here, they will need Brock Rodden to perform at a high level in game one. Rodden was voted the AAC preseason player of the year, after batting .338 in 2022. He needs to lead this team to a better season, especially away from home on, where the Shockers struggled last year.
Long Beach State Dirtbags
The Dirtbags of Long Beach State went 29-27 last year, and fell short of the NCAA Tournament after finishing in a tie for fourth place in the Big West conference. They start their season at home against Wichita State this year, as they look to extend their run of dominance over the Shockers at home.
Long Beach State is 17-9 at home all-time against Wichita State. They will hope that UNLV transfer Joey Walls will help them start their season with another home win over the Shockers here. Walls hit .350 last season and led the nation in doubles, and will play a key role if the Dirtbags are going to be better than they were a year ago.
