Football

The Denver Broncos are a professional American football team based in Denver, Colorado. They were founded in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL), and joined the National Football League (NFL) as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

The Broncos struggled to succeed in their early years, failing to reach the playoffs until 1977. However, the team quickly became a contender, making it to the Super Bowl in 1977, 1986, 1987, and 1989, but losing each time.

In the 1990s, the Broncos experienced sustained success under quarterback John Elway's leadership, winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 1998 and 1999. Elway retired after the 1998 season, but the team remained a competitive force in the NFL.

In recent years, the Broncos have continued to be a competitive team, winning the Super Bowl in 2016 under the leadership of quarterback Peyton Manning. Throughout their history, the Broncos have had many notable players, coaches, and moments, and have established themselves as one of the most successful and popular teams in the NFL.

Basketball

The Denver Nuggets are a professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. They were founded in 1967 as a member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), and joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976 as part of the ABA-NBA merger. The Nuggets struggled in their early years, failing to make the playoffs in their first six seasons.

However, in the 1974-75 season, the team made it to the ABA Finals, but lost to the Kentucky Colonels. In the NBA, the Nuggets struggled to succeed, missing the playoffs in their first seven seasons.

In the 1980s, the team became a competitive force in the Western Conference under the leadership of Alex English and Dan Issel, reaching the playoffs nine times in ten seasons. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Nuggets experienced a period of inconsistency but still had notable players such as Dikembe Mutombo and Carmelo Anthony, who led the team to the playoffs several times.

In recent years, the Nuggets have established themselves as a competitive team in the Western Conference, with star players such as Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray leading the team to multiple playoff appearances.

They clinched their first NBA Championship title in 2023 by defeating the Miami Heat in the finals with a series score of 4-1. This victory marked the end of a long championship drought for the Nuggets, who had never previously won an NBA title nor reached the finals before this triumphant season.

Hockey

The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. They were founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques, and joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 as part of the WHA-NHL merger.

The Nordiques struggled in the NHL, and after several years of low attendance and financial difficulty, the team was sold and moved to Denver in 1995, becoming the Colorado Avalanche.

In their first season in Colorado, the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, led by star players such as Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Patrick Roy. The team won another Stanley Cup in 2001, and have made multiple playoff appearances throughout their history.

The Avalanche have also had some notable players and coaches, including Ray Bourque, who won his only Stanley Cup with the team in 2001, and Patrick Roy, who won two Stanley Cups as both a player and coach for the Avalanche.

Baseball

The Colorado Rockies are a professional baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. They were founded in 1991 and began playing in the National League (NL) in 1993.

The Rockies struggled in their early years, but in 1995, they made a remarkable run to the playoffs as a wildcard team, winning their first-ever playoff series before losing in the NL Championship Series.

In 2007, the Rockies again made it to the playoffs as a wildcard team, and went on to win their first National League pennant before losing in the World Series to the Boston Red Sox.

The Rockies have had some notable players throughout their history, including Todd Helton, who spent his entire 17-year career with the team and is considered one of the greatest players in franchise history.

Despite some successes, the Rockies have mostly struggled to find sustained success in the highly competitive National League West division

Soccer

At Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer were the Western Conference’s best team in 2021, but they fell in the conference semifinals. In the 2022 season, they will look for their second MLS championship, with their first coming in 2010.

Popular Types Of Sports Bets In Colorado

The five most popular types of sports bets vary based on a users preference but these are the top five types for Colorado:

  • Moneyline bets: These are the most straightforward type of bet, where a person bets on which team or player will win the game or match.
  • Point spread bets: In point spread bets, the bettor wagers on the margin of victory in a game or match. The favorite team or player is assigned a point handicap, and the bettor must choose whether the favorite will win by more than the handicap or the underdog will lose by less than the handicap.
  • Over/under bets: In over/under bets, the bettor wagers on whether the total points scored in a game or match will be over or under a specified number.
  • Prop bets: Prop bets, or proposition bets, are bets on specific events or outcomes within a game or match that are not related to the final result, such as the number of points a particular player will score or the duration of the national anthem before a game.
  • Parlays: A parlay bet is a type of sports bet where a bettor places multiple individual wagers on different outcomes, and all of the bets must win in order for the parlay bet to be successful. For example, a bettor may place a parlay bet on three different NFL games: the Broncos to win, the Packers to cover the spread, and the total points scored in the Seahawks game to be over a certain number. If all three of these individual wagers are correct, the bettor wins the parlay bet, which typically has higher odds and a larger payout than if the bets were placed individually.

These are just some of the many types of bets offered in Colorado.

History of Online Sports Betting In Colorado

Online sports betting has a relatively short history in Colorado, with the state legalizing it in November 2019. The first legal sports bets were placed in Colorado on May 1, 2020, following a voter-approved referendum in 2019.

Prior to the legalization of sports betting, Colorado had already legalized other forms of gambling, such as brick-and-mortar casinos and horse racing. However, sports betting remained illegal until the 2019 referendum, which allowed the state to license, regulate and tax sports betting through the Colorado Department of Revenue - Division of Gaming.

Since then, several retail casinos and online sportsbooks have begun offering sports betting in Colorado. The state has also set up regulations to protect consumers and ensure the integrity of sports betting, such as requiring operators to use official league data and prohibiting certain types of bets on college sports.

Colorado has quickly become one of the top states for sports betting, with a market that is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The state's favorable regulatory environment and growing sports fanbase make it an attractive market for online sportsbooks and investors alike.
