Key SEC Football Storylines
Are we destined for Alabama vs Georgia final?
The biggest storyline heading into the SEC football season is whether or not we are going to get another conference title game between Alabama and Georgia. After Florida made the championship game by winning the SEC East, Georgia is the odds-on favorite to win that division in 2021. Their recent conference title games against Alabama have been nail biters for the most part, and another one would be the preferred outcome for most college football fans.
Georgia is led into this season by JT Daniels, who spent time at USC before moving to the SEC. He is one of the Heisman front-runners heading into the season, and could be the best quarterback this era of Georgia football has enjoyed. Alabama, meanwhile, will have a new quarterback in Bryce Young, who is also expected to make an instant impact as a top-four preseason Heisman candidate.
Who will push the favorites?
If anyone is going to prevent Alabama and Georgia from getting to the SEC title game, it will take a herculean effort from one of the other teams in the conference. Florida in the East and Texas A&M in the West are thought to be the best chances to upset the order of things in either division. But it doesn’t seem likely heading into the season that the Crimson Tide or Bulldogs will be taken down from their pedestal at the top of their division.
Can the bad teams show some life?
While the SEC is the best conference in college football, it does also have some of the worst Power 5 teams in the sport as well. Teams like Vanderbilt and South Carolina are expected to be terrible this year, with Vanderbilt being one of the worst teams in the country regardless of conference on a consistent basis. While those teams are expected to get destroyed by the elites in this conference, if they can put up a fight they may be able to play the role of spoiler to some.
2021 SEC Football Predictions
Alabama Will Win Again
Once again, the SEC football season is going to end with the Alabama Crimson Tide coming away with the conference title. They should get stronger as the season goes on as their quarterback gets his legs under him. And with an elite defense and running game, the Tide should be able to cover for his shortcomings early in the season. Expect the Tide to roll to another conference championship.
Only One Playoff Team
While it is always possible that the SEC gets two teams into the College Football Playoff, they are only going to get one team in this year. Georgia starts its season with Clemson, and has to beat Alabama to win the conference. That sets the Bulldogs up for more than one potential loss this year, which would bump them out of playoff contention unless they were to upset one of the two giants of the sport.
