Rafael Nadal vs Borna Coric
The 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is back on the court and will begin his campaign at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday against World No. 152 Coric.
This will be the Spaniard's first match since withdrawing from his Wimbledon semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios in July due to an abdominal tear. The current World No. 3's bid for a third consecutive Slam title and a calendar Grand Slam was ended by an easy victory. The former World No. 1 won the Australian Open and the French Open earlier this year.
Rafa and Coric have met four times in their careers. Their head-to-head record is 2-2. Nadal won the 2015 US Open and the 2017 Canadian Open, while Coric outperformed him at the 2014 Swiss Indoors and the 2016 Cincinnati Masters.
The Croatian international Borna Coric has two titles on the senior circuit, the most recent of which he won in Halle in 2018 with a final victory over Roger Federer.
Unfortunately, Coric has had a difficult recovery from shoulder surgery this season. The 25-year-old was sidelined for the entirety of 2021, and he made a comeback at this year's Indian Wells Open, but he did not advance past the first round.
