LSU Tigers
The LSU Tigers beat a conference foe to start their College World Series, as they got the better of the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. LSU got 7.2 innings of two-run ball from Paul Skenes in that game, with Skenes striking out 12 Volunteers along the way. In this game, the Tigers will look for another brilliant pitching performance from another starter as they look to prove that they are superior to the number one Demon Deacons on Monday.
For the Tigers, another huge question going into this game is whether they can sustain their power from Saturday in this contest. LSU got two solo home runs against Tennessee, but will be facing a much tougher overall opponent in Wake Forest on Monday. The ability of the Tigers to generate extra-base hits could go a long way in deciding this top-five matchup in Omaha.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest survived a low-scoring matchup with the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, in a game that saw a long rain delay break up the momentum of the contest. But the pitching of the Demon Deacons was not deterred by the rain, as they used just four pitchers to shut down Stanford. Here, it may take more of a full-team effort from their pitching staff to stifle LSU.
It may also take hitting from more hitters than just Brock Wilken for Wake Forest to advance to 2-0 in the College World Series. Wilken hit his 31st home run of the season against Stanford to get Wake on the board, but they will need more contributions from elsewhere to win this matchup on Monday night to avoid the loser's bracket.
