East Carolina Pirates
The East Carolina Pirates rebounded nicely from their first loss of this season, winning two games in a row over the North Carolina Tar Heels over the weekend. Those wins came on Friday and Sunday, with the second game of the series being cancelled due to rain. Here, the Pirates will look for a third straight win over a North Carolina-based foe as they take on Duke.
For the Pirates, the question in this game is whether their pitching can do enough to deliver another victory after two close calls against UNC. The Pirates allowed five runs in each of their two meetings with the Tar Heels, and another lackluster showing from their pitching staff could lead to an upset at the hands of the Blue Devils.
Duke Blue Devils
The Duke Blue Devils are off to a 5-2 start to this season, and they won three straight games over the weekend after a 2-2 start. Those three wins came over the Baylor Bears, who the Blue Devils teed off on in all three games of their series. Duke hit double figures in runs scored in all three of those games, sweeping the series by a combined margin of 52-7.
After putting up scores that more closely resembled football scores than baseball scores over the weekend, the question for Duke is whether they can keep their offensive momentum rolling. Against a far superior team to the one they faced over the weekend, the Blue Devils will need to do a better job of grinding out runs against the Pirates to avoid seeing their losing streak come to an end.
