Sea Dragons vs Defenders XFL Pick & Sportsbook Promos 2/19/23
Last updated February 15, 2023
The final game of the XFL Week 1 slate in 2023 will take place in Washington D.C., where the DC Defenders will host the Seattle Sea Dragons. Both of these teams were a part of the 2020 version of the XFL, but will look entirely different in the 2023 edition. Both teams will like their chances to start the season with a win in a game where the point spread is tight going in.
In the last of our XFL Week 1 betting picks, we look at Sea Dragons vs Defenders on Sunday.

Why bet on the Sea Dragons:
✅ Jordan Ta'amu will be expected to play well for the Defenders given his performance with the BattleHawks in the 2020 XFL. But he was not nearly as good last year in the USFL, and the DC offense will not be as good as advertised
✅ Ben DiNucci is a punchline among NFL fans, but his top-flight professional experience will only help the Sea Dragons early in the year
✅ Seattle is among the favorites to win the XFL championship and getting them at even odds to start the season will look like a bargain as the year goes on

Seattle Sea Dragons
The Seattle Sea Dragons were one of the worst teams in the 2020 iteration of the XFL, going 1-4 and being tied for the worst record in the league. This season, expectations are higher for the team going into the season, as they are behind only the St. Louis BattleHawks on the list of favorites to win the league title going into this year. Here, the Sea Dragons will look to justify that hype (hype by spring football league standards, at least) with a win over the DC Defenders on the road.
Of course, all eyes will be on Ben DiNucci at the quarterback position for the Sea Dragons, as the former Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback looks to prove himself in the XFL. Things did not go well when DiNucci was called upon to play in Dallas in the place of the injured Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton. But protecting the quarterback was clearly an issue on that team, and things could go better for him against inferior competition.
DC Defenders
The DC Defenders were a fun team in 2020, with Cardale Jones being an impressive quarterback and fans making massive snakes out of empty beer cups in the stands. This time around, the Defenders have turned to Jordan Ta'amu as their starting quarterback, who was one of the stars of the 2020 XFL season before it was shut down. Going into their opener against the Seattle Sea Dragons, the question is whether Ta'amu can recapture that 2020 magic to help his team win.
Ta'amu led the USFL in passing yardage last year with the Tampa Bay Bandits. But that was a product of him throwing more passes and starting more games than any other QB in the league, more than it was about him being all that good. He completed just 57% of his passes in his USFL season last year, and will need to be more precise with the ball, like he was when he completed 72% of his passes in five games with the BattleHawks three years ago.
