North Carolina Tar Heels
The North Carolina Tar Heels are the three-seed in the Terre Haute Regional, after going 35-22 this year. Most of their wins came at home this season, with UNC going 24-12 at home and 11-10 in away and neutral site games combined. The question now is whether the Tar Heels can put together a run away from Chapel Hill to get out of this region.
For North Carolina to win this game, they are going to need to be patient at the plate. Iowa ranks second in the country in hits allowed per nine innings, but they are outside of the top-200 nationally in walks allowed per nine. Hits could be hard to come by for the Heels, but if they can wait out the arms of Iowa, they could get runners on base nonetheless.
Iowa had a great season in the Big Ten, going 42-14 and 15-8 in conference play, earning the second seed in Terre Haute. Despite falling short against Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament, they went 3-1 during that week in Omaha. On Friday, the Hawkeyes will look to kick start another trip to Omaha with a win over North Carolina.
For the Hawkeyes, control on the mound is going to decide how far their tournament goes, and whether it goes beyond Terre Haute. Iowa ranks 235th in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings, putting them behind such powerhouses as the Albany Great Danes and Texas Southern Tigers in that category. They cannot afford to give away so many free passes here if they want to stay in the winner's bracket in Indiana.
