NFL to release schedule for 2022 season on May 12

Last updated May 6, 2022

The NFL 2022 regular season is less than five months away. The league scheduled the competition set to take place from September 8 this year all the way to January 8, 2023, in addition to having the defending Super Bowl LVI Champion Los Angeles Rams host the kickoff game. As the season comes closer, the NFL also planned to release the 2022 schedule on May 12 at 8 p.m. ET.

The upcoming release date of the 2022 schedule is the same date as last year’s release. NFL enthusiasts also may tune in to NFL Network, NFL.com, and the NFL App to find out more about schedule-related coverage.

NFL teases ahead of schedule release, what to expect

Despite the regular season is still quite far ahead by the end of this year, the NFL offseason is running in full swing. The most recent offseason event was the 2022 NFL Draft back on April 28-30 which sets franchises in countless directions they may go having draft picks in their pocket to spend.

Earlier this week May 2 marked the deadline for teams to exercise their fifth-year options for players they deem fit. In most cases, for rookie players entering the fourth year of their contract, their franchise may option them for a fifth-year option which often features, among other things, multiple salaries than what is stated on their first four years of deals.

Far from regular season also means choke-full of team preparations ahead of the prime agendas. This month alone, each franchise was given the chance to have rookie minicamps (6-9 or 13-16), the first season of OTA offseason workouts where players will be given an in-depth look at the preseason field (23-26) and followed by the second OTA offseason workouts (23-26).

Later in June, teams will be given a chance to take the third OTA offseason workout (6-8), mandatory minicamp (14-16), and franchise tag deadline where teams must set a player under a long-term deal or only a single year to run with the franchise (15).

In the following months, training camp sessions are slated to take place sometime in mid-July followed by the NFL preseason in early August, and the regular season of the league in September.

NFL had teased ahead of the 2022 schedule release. The NFL during the first round of the draft announced that the first Thursday football game or Week 2 of the season will have the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West battle.

The league also announced earlier this week May 4 teams for the international series games in addition to a follow-up announcement of select games by May 9.

Other than having the defending Super Bowl LVI Champion Rams host the kickoff game, three countries, namely the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Germany have been selected to have NFL international games.

Reportedly, the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, and Jacksonville Jaguars will plot a course to the UK to play a single home game in London. At the time of writing this article, three games have been announced, the Minnesota Vikings vs New Orleans (October 2), the New York Giants vs Green Bay (October 9), and the Denver Broncos vs Jacksonville (October 30).

Additional games

In addition to the three, the Arizona Cardinals will play the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico (November 21) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to debut the first-ever NFL game in Munich, Germany against the Seattle Seahawks (November 13).
