The Florida Gators had a real chance to take a 1-0 lead in the championship series of the Men's College World Series. They held a 3-2 lead going into the eighth inning against LSU, but gave up a home run in that inning before giving up another one in the 11th inning to lose 4-3. Now, Florida faces elimination and must win today in order to force a Game 3 on Monday night.
For Florida, simply making more contact will be a must if they want to hang around in this series. They struck out 20 times, comprising nearly two-thirds of their 33 outs in Game 1. Giving themselves a chance to get on base by putting the ball in play would certainly be helpful in Sunday's Game 2.
LSU Tigers
LSU came into Game 1 against Florida with a significant rest disadvantage. But they managed to get a win anyway, coming back late and winning in the 11th inning. Now, LSU is one win away from a national championship after a season where they were arguably the best team in the country all season long.
While Paul Skenes will not be available in Game 2, the Tigers bullpen should be available nearly in full for this contest. The Tigers only had to use one bullpen arm in Game 1, with just two pitchers combining to go the full 11 innings on Saturday. That could give them the advantage they need to finish this series and finish off their championship season without the need for a Game 3 on Monday.
