Washington State Cougars vs Wisconsin Badgers
The Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 38-0 in Week 1. Braelon Allen, an 18-year-old running back, gained 148 yards and two touchdowns on 10.6 yards per carry, including one in the first half that went for 96 yards and gave the Badgers a 14-0 lead after a slow start.
The Badgers (1-0) will host the Washington State Cougars (1-0) on Saturday and according to the Football Power Index at ESPN, Wisconsin has a 92.9% chance of defeating Washington State.
The last time Wisconsin faced Washington State, starting QB Tyler Donovan threw three touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Badgers to a 42-21 victory in the 2007 season opener.
For this Saturday's game, Graham Mertz will likely start as QB against the Cougars. Mertz threw for 219 yards and a touchdown to Chimere Dike in a strong performance against Illinois State. He also avoided turning the ball over in the game.
Hunter Wohler left the game against Illinois State in the second half with what appeared to be a leg injury. He did not return to the field and was seen using crutches and a walking boot. Wohler could be replaced by Utah transfers Kamo'i Latu or Preston Zachman.
Washington State Cougars
The Washington State Cougars defeated the Idaho Vandals 24-17 avoiding an embarrassing first game defeat in Jake Dickert's coaching debut. Dickert served as the team's acting head coach for the final five games of the 2021 regular season after Nick Rolovich was let go as well.
The Cougars didn't have much room to maneuver until early in the fourth quarter, when QB Cameron Ward connected on a quick pass to true freshman Jaylen Jenkins for a touchdown, giving them a 14-point lead.
The Cougar defense tallied seven sacks and four tackles for loss, dominating Idaho's offensive line for much of the night. After a sloppy first quarter, the Cougar offense began to find some rhythm in the second quarter, as they did just enough to bring home the win.
Both Washington State wide receiver CJ Moore and offensive lineman Rodrick Tialavea will miss the 2022 season due to injuries sustained during fall camp.
