Texas Longhorns receive most votes in preseason coaches poll
August 10, 2022
The annual preseason coaches poll is the first chance for college football fans to get excited about the upcoming season. Some notable teams are expected to perform well this season. One of these is the Texas football team, led by Steve Sarkisian, who is in his second season as the head coach. The team lost six straight games in October and November last year.
Despite being placed 18th in the coaches poll, the Texas Longhorns received one first-place vote. The 65 coaches participating in the poll are anonymous, so it is impossible to tell who the actual voter is.
Difficult schedule ahead
Despite being a traditional power program, the Texas football team is still trying to regain its relevance under Sarkisian. The team's early-season schedule will be difficult, as it will face off against one of the best teams in the country, Alabama and Nick Saban.
The USA Today coaches' poll released Monday showed that Alabama was the favorite to win the national championship. The Crimson Tide received 54 first-place votes from the 65 coaches in the poll.
The Texas football team will also get another test during its first week of the season when it hosts the UTSA Roadrunners. Under the leadership of Jeff Traylor, the Roadrunners went 12-2 last season.
The Longhorns will have an opportunity to get a taste of what the SEC will look like in 2025 when it begins its membership in the league.
New QB brings hype
The hype surrounding the Texas football team in 2022 is mainly due to the team's recruitment in July. One of the players who caught the public's attention was Quinn Ewers, a quarterback from Ohio State.
Ewers, who will be competing with Hudson Card for the starting position, is a native of Texas. He got his degree from a local high school in Arlington, Texas, two years after he decided to transfer to Ohio State.
According to CBS Sports, Sarkisian is excited about the competition between Ewers and Card. He said that both of them are highly motivated and have great teammates. The two will be able to compete for the starting position when the season begins.
"I'm excited for both of these guys," Sarkisian said. "They're both great teammates, both are really coachable, both highly competitive, highly driven young men that both would love to take the field when the team takes the field on September 3."
Despite the positive signs that the Texas football team is showing under Sarkisian, the 2022 season will not likely be the year the program returns to prominence.
The Longhorns defense has to perform better to avoid being the victim of multiple 30-point losses in a season. In 2021, the team allowed 30 or more points in seven losses.
Other Texas teams in the list
The Texas A&M football team is ranked seventh in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The team was coming off a disappointing 8-4 season in 2021, and it will look to build on that success in 2022 with a solid recruiting class. The season's first game will be against Sam Houston on September 3.
The Baylor Bears were also ranked ninth in the country after it won the Big 12 Conference title and claimed the Sugar Bowl. The Bears will begin the 2022 season on September 3 against the University of Albany.
The Houston Cougars are the last Texas team to be ranked in the top 25. It was the first time in six years that the program has been in the top 25 of the Coaches Poll. The team went 12-2 last season.
