NFL Week 5: Raiders to face Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes expected to play

Last updated October 9, 2022

The Las Vegas Raiders will face the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL Week 5 game, with QB Patrick Mahomes expected to lead the Chiefs.

According to reports, as the division’s best quarterback, he could challenge the Raiders’ defense. Las Vegas' defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said that Mahomes was an “elite” player, referring to his ability.

"He’s at such an elite status in terms of his ability to perform under pressure, make plays within the system,” Graham said.

“It’s a difficult challenge and I think our preparation for each week, we try to attack it brand new whoever the opponent is and try to see what they do best, how can we take it away, who are they going to in certain situations?”

Mahomes ranked seventh overall in the league with 1,106 passing yards accumulated ahead of Week 5. In scoring offense, his 11 passing touchdowns tied with the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff and Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson.

Mahomes has 2,546 passing yards against the Raiders in eight career games, the most he has against any franchise in the league.

Mahomes getting recognition

The Raiders safety Duron Harmon shared his thoughts on Mahomes, saying that the 27-year-old continues to improve himself by getting more comfortable and wiser in his performance.

“He knows where he wants to go with the football. He’s doing a good job of getting the ball out quick," Harmon said of Mahomes.

"Even when it’s dropped back, he just knows where he wants to go with the ball. This is a young quarterback who has continued to grow year after year, game after game.”

According to Pro Football Focus, the Raiders safety Johnathan Abram has allowed three touchdowns in coverage against the Chiefs. In addition, when facing the Chiefs, Abram allowed 19 receptions on 20 targets for 237 yards.

Ahead of this matchup, the Raiders cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Amik Robertson will likely play in the defensive lineup to face the Chiefs’ offense, as revealed by some sources.

Both Hobbs and Robertson said that Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Before facing Mahomes, Robertson noted that they need to "fix" their play.

“I think we're very confident, we just got to fix some small things that we know we’re capable of fixing,” Robertson said. “Because a guy like Mahomes, you make a few mistakes, you might regret it at the end of the game. He’s one of the best quarterbacks in this league.”

Despite the Chiefs winning seven of their last eight meetings with the Raiders, Mahomes said that the upcoming game might present a tight battle as he described Las Vegas as a team rival with a strong roster.

“It’s a true rivalry, we know that it doesn’t matter what the records are, you’re going to go out there and play. It’s going to be a dog fight," Mahomes said.

And they have a great football team, their record – they don’t have the best record - but every game, they’ve been in the game or been leading the game at certain points.”

This season, the Raiders are on a 1-3 overall record and have allowed 13 touchdowns, including seven passing TDs.

They will travel to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City for their Week 5 game.
