Michigan Wolverines announce first international tour under coach Juwan Howard

Last updated May 28, 2022

On Friday, May 27, Michigan Wolverines made an announcement regarding the team's international trip. They will travel to France and Greece in August to perform three exhibition games.

Through the announcement, it was written “Time to pack our bags! The Maize & Blue are teaming with Complete Sports Management for a summer trip to France & Greece!”

Under NCAA regulations, international travel programs are permitted once every 4 years. NCAA considered that this international trip would not only add to the cultural experience as it also allows the program to hold up to 10 additional workouts over the summer.

Furthermore, this trip will allow Juwan Howard, the coach, and the staff to get to know the members of a team that includes many new players. Tarris Reed, Jett Howard, Dug McDaniel, Gregg Glenn, and Jaelin Llewellyn were among the four new students who enrolled.

The Wolverines' first international trip under Howard

Before traveling to Athens and Mykonos in Greece, the Wolverines will visit Paris first. While abroad, the team will compete in three exhibition matches. However, the date and opponent of the match have yet to be determined.

This European tour adds to the list of international travel for the Wolverines. It was also the team's first international trip under coach Howard.

Previously, under coach John Beilein the Wolverines traveled to Spain ahead of the 2018-19 season, to Italy in 2014, and to Belgium in 2010.

At that time, Beilein expressed his joy in joining the Wolverines' international journey by saying, “Having the opportunity to travel like this will be a lasting memory for our players. We are allowed to do this trip every four years, so this will be our third trip during my time in Michigan.”

Beilein considered that each trip has proven to be a wonderful educational experience for the student-athlete. It's also a great opportunity for the team to learn about other countries' cultures as well as forge strong bonds as a team.

Another international trip coming up

In December, the Wolverines will return to Europe to take on the Kentucky Wildcats in London. This match is part of the inaugural London Downtown Showcase Basketball Hall of Fame. Initially, the event was to be held at the end of 2020 which was later postponed due to the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A doubleheader will fill the match on December 4. Marist Red Foxes will face Maine Black Bears at 10:30 a.m. ET, while the Wolverines will encounter the Wildcats at 1 p.m. ET.

Howard expressed his satisfaction with this international trip, “After everything that has happened over the past few years for us, and even the world, this will be a tremendous opportunity for Michigan, Kentucky, and college basketball itself. This was because both teams had the opportunity to showcase their game at a well-known event.

The Wolverines will also compete in the Jumpman Invitational, which will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina at the end of December this year. In November, the team will travel to Brooklyn for a two-day tournament.
